Generator Buying: It's Not About the Price Tag
There's no single "best" generator. What works for a contractor with a 2200 watt inverter is useless for a homeowner looking at a 26kW standby unit. The real question isn't which model—it's which scenario you're in.

Scenario 1: The Short-Term Patch
You need portable power for occasional site work. Maybe you're a contractor who needs a 2200 watt inverter generator. You care about weight and noise, not 20-year reliability. You'll likely sell it in 2-3 years.
In this scenario, the lowest upfront cost wins—provided you factor in fuel efficiency. An 8kW portable generator that guzzles propane is a liability. A smaller, fuel-injected inverter model costs more upfront but burns half the fuel over a season. I once saw a crew burn through $400 in propane in a single week with an inefficient unit.

The mistake? Buying a single generator that tries to do everything. A 38kW standby unit for the house and a 5500W portable for the jobsite. They're completely different machines—different fuel systems, different use cases. Trying to combine them usually means overpaying for a unit that does neither well.

- What's the consequence of failure? Spoiled food and a cold house? TCO matters. Missed site work? Cost per use matters.
