IEC 62040-3 defines three performance classes: VFI (Voltage and Frequency Independent) — true online double conversion, output is always conditioned regardless of input; this is the highest protection class, used in data centers and critical manufacturing. VI (Voltage Independent) — line-interactive topology, output voltage is regulated but frequency is not when on battery. VFD (Voltage and Frequency Dependent) — offline/standby topology, output follows mains when available. PowerSentinel's SentinelPro and SentinelPower ranges are VFI-SS-111 classified — the most stringent sub-classification confirming zero transfer time to battery.

Active power factor correction (Active PFC) in the UPS input stage draws near-sinusoidal current from the mains supply, achieving input power factors of PF ≥ 0.99 and total harmonic distortion (THDi) below 3%. Without active PFC, UPS systems with diode bridge rectifiers typically generate THDi of 25–30%, causing utility reactive power penalties, overheating of cables and transformers, and interference with sensitive electronic loads. For facilities with utility contracts that include harmonic penalty clauses, specifying active PFC UPS equipment eliminates reactive power charges and protects other equipment in the distribution network.

North American data center projects typically require UL 1778 (Uninterruptible Power Systems) listing as a project specification baseline. Canadian projects additionally require CSA C22.2 No. 107.3 or equivalent CSA certification. For data centers seeking ENERGY STAR building certification, specifying ENERGY STAR certified UPS equipment contributes to points under relevant green building rating systems. Mixed IT and mechanical loads require careful capacity calculation because power factor varies significantly between load types. IT server loads typically present PF 0.9–0.95; HVAC variable speed drives present PF 0.85–0.95; older HVAC compressors can present PF as low as 0.7. The UPS must be sized in kVA to cover apparent power, not just real power (kW). Calculate the total apparent power (kVA) for each load group, sum the totals, then add a 20–25% overhead margin for load growth and battery discharge derating. For critical applications, our applications engineers provide detailed load flow calculations and recommend derating curves based on your specific ambient temperature and altitude conditions.
