Eaton Circuit Breaker Buying Guide: AFCI Selection, MCCB Catalog, Surge Protection, and Spark Plug Equivalents

If you need Eaton circuit breakers, start with the current catalog, not with memory—or rather, not only with memory. The best Eaton AFCI breaker is the one on your panel's tested compatibility list, not the one with the most features. For molded case circuit breakers, the official Eaton MCCB catalog is the reference that keeps you from ordering an obsolete frame. For whole-house surge protection, the installation is straightforward for a licensed electrician, but you still need to choose the right Type 2 SPD. And if someone on your team asks about an L7T spark plug equivalent or a KLX 110 spark plug in the same month, that's normal for a facilities purchasing role.

I'm an office administrator who manages maintenance purchasing for a company with about 400 employees across three locations. I process 60–80 orders a year across eight vendors. I don't install breakers myself; I'm the person who makes sure the right part number arrives with the right paperwork. When I took over this role in 2020, I thought a breaker was a breaker. What is the best Eaton AFCI circuit breaker?

For most Eaton Type BR load centers, the practical answer is a 15-amp or 20-amp BR-series AFCI. A common 20-amp one-pole part is the BRP120AF; for 15 amps, it's the BRP115AF. If you have a plug-on-neutral load center, order the plug-on-neutral CAFCI version so you don't have to wrestle with a pigtail. For a 2-pole 240-volt circuit, use a BR-series 2-pole AFCI like the BRP215AF or BRP220AF, depending on the circuit amperage.

I used to think 'best' meant the newest combination AFCI/GFCI. Actually, a standard AFCI is enough on a circuit that only requires arc-fault protection. The combination unit is worth the extra cost when you also need ground-fault protection, such as in a finished basement or garage. The real test is whether the breaker is listed for your panel.

NEC 2023, NFPA 70, Section 210.12 requires AFCI protection for many 120-volt, 15-amp and 20-amp branch circuits in dwelling units. Verify your local adopted edition before ordering; state and local amendments vary.

I only started checking compatibility after ignoring it once. A breaker from a different product line fit physically, but it wasn't on the panel's tested combination list. How to use the Eaton molded case circuit breaker catalog

The worst MCCB mistake is treating a price sheet as a catalog. The Eaton molded case circuit breaker catalog, called the Molded Case Circuit Breaker Application and Specification Guide, is the official document for frame sizes, interrupting ratings, and accessories. Search 'Eaton MCCB catalog' and look for a PDF published by Eaton, then check the revision date. As of January 2025, Eaton's online catalog allows you to filter by pole count, amperage, interrupting capacity, and accessory options.

When you order an MCCB, specify: frame size, pole count, continuous amperage, interrupting rating (kAIC), terminal type, and any internal accessories. A catalog number from a 2018 edition can look similar to a current one, but manufacturers update part numbers and compliance listings. Our team keeps a copy of the current PDF on the maintenance drive. That one habit cut our electrical parts turnaround from five days to two.

I once told a vendor to send the 'Eaton equivalent' of a different manufacturer's MCCB. They heard 'nearest match.' The breaker was mechanically interchangeable but not listed for our application. That order taught me to put the full catalog number and the manufacturer's document reference on every PO. And the vendor who can't issue a proper invoice? I've learned to verify that before they get our account.

How to install a whole house surge protector

Here is the anti-intuitive part: most people think surge protectors are for lightning, but a lot of surge damage starts inside the building—motor starts, air conditioner cycles, and other equipment switching. A Type 2 SPD at the load center catches those events better than a cheap power strip.

As of the 2023 NEC, Section 230.67 requires a listed Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device at many new dwelling-unit services. For existing buildings, a whole-house surge protector is still one of the best electrical upgrades for the cost. Here is the installation process I verify when our electrician bids a job:

  1. Confirm the SPD is a listed Type 2 device with a surge current rating appropriate for the service. Eaton's CHSPT2ULTRA is one common example, but check the current product line.
  2. Turn off the main breaker and verify it is off with a non-contact tester. The service entrance lugs are still live, so this is not a job for an untrained person.
  3. Mount the SPD outside or beside the panel in a location allowed by its instructions.
  4. Install a dedicated 2-pole breaker in the panel for the SPD, or use the breaker built into the unit if the model includes one.
  5. Connect the SPD leads to the breaker, neutral bar, and ground bar in the order specified in the manual. On a service entrance, follow the bonding rules in Article 230.
  6. Torque the terminals to the spec in the manual. Loose terminals cause more field failures than people expect.
  7. Close and label the panel, turn the main back on, and confirm the status LED reads normal.

L7T spark plug equivalent and KLX 110 spark plug

Because a facilities department often orders both electrical and small-engine parts, 'l7t spark plug equivalent' and 'klx 110 spark plug' can end up on the same purchase list. They're not related, and they should not be cross-referenced against each other.

For L7T spark plug equivalent: L7T is a Champion small-engine plug, often found in air-cooled equipment. A safe equivalent must have the same thread size, reach, heat range, and resistor/non-resistor design. Use Champion's own cross-reference or NGK's engine lookup, not a vendor's memory. If you don't know the equipment model, the old spark plug is the spec.

For a KLX 110 spark plug, the Kawasaki KLX110 generally uses NGK CR7HSA in most model years I've ordered. Actually, some model years list C7HSA, so confirm in the owner's manual before ordering. The gap is small, and the manual's number beats any general chart. Oh, and don't assume an L7T equivalent will work in a KLX110 just because both are small spark plugs. Different thread sizes and reaches.

It took me two or three wrong spark plugs to understand that a 'will fit' listing is not the same as an OEM-specified replacement. The right plug is not the expensive part; the wrong one costs time, a follow-up order, and someone waiting on a machine.

Boundary conditions

This guide doesn't cover every panel and code combination. If your panel is older than the current breaker line, compatibility is the first question, not the part number. If you have a service entrance with metering or utility restrictions, an electrician must handle the surge protector installation. If you're ordering spark plugs for a modified engine, trust the engine builder's spec, not a general equivalent chart. The right process is the same as Eaton breaker ordering: verify the exact number, then buy.
